THE
SHAPE OF TIME ... The surge of patriotism in the wake of 9/11
hasn’t disappeared, it’s just become a little less fiery than
it was in the months immediately following the attacks. This
patented calendar is a perfect example. It consists of two
interlocking pieces (allows for flat mailing) of plastic; one
shaped like the letter “U,” the other like an “S.” The
result is a three-dimensional desk/shelf piece that not only gives
you the date (six months on each side of the U), but also projects
a quiet but unmistakable message of pride in support of America.
If desired, the calendar can be replaced with other information,
or simply a logo and slogan, to provide a more permanent impact.

MORE
OFFICE STYLE ... Desktop business card holders are something
most of us rarely think about except as a place to hold your cards
so you can always find one when you need it. But why shouldn’t
they have some personality, too? These holders, cast of a polished
chrome plate over alloy, are available in two distinct designs –
a house and a bull and bear. Both are hefty enough to act as
paperweights and carry some serious high-perceived value. While
each is a natural for certain businesses – the bull and bear for
stockbrokers and investment houses, the house for realtors –
with a little imagination, a whole bunch of applications will
probably shine through. Each comes gift-boxed and can be screened
or etched.

SOLID
SIPPING ... Coffee mugs? Why on earth would you want to use
something so traditional for your innovative promotional campaign?
One, because they’re traditional for a reason; people made them
traditional. And two, because mugs like the “Trombly” show up
from time to time to make everything fresh again. Resembling a
small sculpture and molded from a solid massive chunk of
break-resistant plastic, this item definitely makes a statement.
It holds 15 ounces of liquid, is microwaveable and top-rack
dishwasher safe, and (unless you deliberately knock it off a desk)
it’s virtually spill- and tip-proof. Just as effective holding
pens, pencils or paper clips as it is filled with any hot or cold
beverage. In white, black and translucent sapphire.

ANOTHER
TWIST ... Who, exactly, was it that said translucent was dead?
Not yet it ain’t – it’s just become a little less
“in-your-face.” And new twists are being added every day.
These plastic “Explorer” luggage tags offer not only
durability and high-visibility at the airport baggage terminal or
hotel holding area, they also add a splash of fashion and color as
well. They attach securely in seconds and accept a standard-size
business card. Or, if preferred, there’s a printed card provided
to write your information on. They take a clean, sharp imprint and
offer a large logo area. Available in six translucent colors –
or for those who prefer to remain a bit more conservative, four
standard colors, too.

ONE
STEP FURTHER ... Hmmm. For some reason, this issue’s New
Products section seems to contain a lot of supposedly-vanished
trends that really haven’t. Environmentally responsible (or
“green”) marketing is yet another example. Dustpans are
something nearly everyone uses but few people buy for themselves
(stay with us here). Therefore, they’re appreciated and used.
They’ve also been imprinted for at least a decade, maybe more.
But this is the first one we’ve seen (imprinted or not) that’s
made of 100% post-industrial recycled plastic. It’s comparable
in every way to any other dustpan, except that it’s kinder to
the planet in its own small way. And If you like the idea of
recycled promotional products, these dustpans have several
friends, including rulers, pet dishes, buckets, desk sets and
cleaning caddies.

TIMELESS
TRIO ... With “retro” today referring to anything older
than a year or two, the term tends to lose a little of its magic.
These glass awards, however, convey different retro eras in the
true sense of the word. “Confetti,” reminiscent of the ‘50s,
features a shower of spots on one side. In jade or luminaire; in
three sizes. The ‘40s are represented by this elegant
stainless-steel display or serving tray with a large glass insert
that can be etched. Finally, the ‘20s and ‘30s check in with
these custom-cut awards that perfectly resurrect Art Deco’s
heyday. They’re crafted of clear luminaire mounted on black
glass. Any one of these is likely to capture folks’ attention in
a home or office.

HAND-OFF
... Clip-on watches are slowly becoming more visible for those
who prefer not to go the wrist route. For something a little more
cutting-edge, you might want to check out the “Jellybeaner.”
Modeled loosely after a carabiner, but manufactured of durable but
lightweight plastic, it features an integral spring clip that
allows it to be attached to belt loops, backpacks, keytags,
purses, suitcases, etc. The large digital display shows day, date
and time, and the unit includes an alarm, valet light and
chronograph. In grape, licorice, strawberry and blueberry, it
comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

ON
YOUR TIME OR THEIRS ... The “Mason” work jacket just looks
good. In fact, there’s no reason at all it couldn’t be called
a play jacket instead. Made of 100% cotton duck, it offers a lot
of detail, including a quilted lining, a hood lined in the same
kind of fleece found in sweatshirts, solid brass front zipper, two
front slash pockets, knit cuffs and waistband, and an inside
pocket. It’s available in brown, olive, black, forest, spice or
navy; in regular sizes S-XXXXXL and tall sizes LT-XXXXXLT.

FLASH
OF PANACHe ... Here’s a desk/shelf clock that’s absolutely
not something you’ll see in everyone’s office. Stressing
design just as much as function, this timepiece features
all-plastic construction, a very contemporary look, one-year
guarantee and American quartz movement. The neutral oyster body, which fits most decors, can be had with
charcoal, mango or mint contrasting base and hands. It has a very
visible but unobtrusive imprint area. And the price includes a
one-color imprint – more are available at extra cost. The clock
operates on one AA battery, which is also included.
